Peter Aldridge works with light in much the same way that a musician works with sound. He has said:

‘The underlying mathematical progression of individual notes, the multiplicity of overlaying rhythms, tonal range and chromatic intervals all have their parallels when composing with light.

The objects I make have an inherent mathematical progression, just as a musical instrument has proportion in its fingerboard and precision in its construction, both critical to the sound it produces.’

Physical description

Sculpture of 24 vertical clear glass strips set in a square formation with angled, 'prisms' set within in a downward spiral formation. Starphire plate glass used for the vertical strips, dichroic-coated glass for the 'prisms'. The vertical strips are set into a slotted steel base plate covered with a polished slotted aluminium finishing plate.

Starphire is the brand name of a flat glass manufactured by the Pittsburgh Plate Glass company. A dichroic coating, deposited in a hydrogen chamber, transmits certain frequencies of light and reflects others in a range of colours which vary from limited to a very wide spectrum. This work has the most sophisticated of colour ranges possible using this complex and extremely expensive technique.

'A Moment in Time' is displayed in a case constructed in non reflective glass, to allow visitors to enjoy the work without uninterruption.
