Drawing

ca. 1605 - 1627 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Drawing, in ink, watercolour and gold on paper, depicting a darvish. The outline of the darvish is drawn with a fine black line, with details of his shawl, hat, face and hair touched in with colours. The background is sparsely filled with flowering plants in the lower half of the composition, painted in colours against the natural buff colour of the page. The portrait is framed by a narrow border containing Persian verses, a border of gold palmettes on an indigo ground, and wider borders containing flowering plants. The exact correspondence between the dimensions of the figure depicted here, and in IM.10-1925 suggest that the same tracing was used for both.
