This Christmas cracker label by Batger’s & Co is probably from the first few decades of the 20th century. The V&A collection includes a series of cracker labels by the firm, established in 1748. This image shows a little girl and Father Christmas, both listening to the radio or ‘wireless’. The crackers are branded as ‘Wireless Crackers’, the cracker company associating itself with the newly popular radio sets. It is an interesting document, an insight into the social history of the time.
This object illustrates the changing styles of commercial design and packaging formats over the years.
