Leonard Baskin has played a crucial role in the development of wood engraving both as a fine art process and an illustrative medium. His particular engagement with the images of artists of the past has been one of the key influences in his work. This print, based on an early portrait of Samuel Palmer, is a signed single-sheet impression, of one of the illustrations from Baskin's book, 'Blake and the Young Ancients', celebrating the followers of William Blake. The woodcut is actually derived from a contemporary portrait of Palmer in pencil and watercolour by Henry Walter, now in the British Museum.
