Garter worn by Barry Jones as King Charles I in the play Charles I, 1936. Garter of deep blue velvet in two parts, buckled together right of the centre, the remaining 'tail' tied into a single flat knot. Edged with narrow gold Russia braid. Embroidered from left with 'QUI. MAL. Y. PENSE' and (to right of buckle) 'HONI. SOIT.' in narrow gold metal cord; the 'tail' embroidered with a leaf design in narrow gold metal cord. Lined with deep blue satin. Fastened with large press stud on to elastic addition.

Garter worn by Barry Jones as King Charles I in Maurice Colbourne's play 'Charles I' at the Lyric Theatre, London, 9th October 1936. The production was designed by Motley, and also toured Canada in 1939.

Given to the British Theatre Museum Association by Barry Jones in October 1968 as part of the Barry Jones - Maurice Colbourne Collection.
