Garter worn by Henry Irving as Charles I. 24"x1" garter in blackish green velvet, edged with gold narrow Russia braid. Embroidered from left with 'HONI. SOIT. QUI. MAL. Y. PENSE' in narrow gold metal cord; embroidered at right with herringbone pattern in narrow gold metal cord. Attached at left a gilt metal embossed buckle. Lined with deep grey green silk.

Object history
This garter was worn by Henry Irving when he appeared as King Charles I in W. G. Wills play "Charles I", performed at the Lyceum Theatre, London, 28th September 1872. The production was directed by H. L. Bateman, and the scenery was designed by Hawes Craven and Cuthbert.
