This stylish costume was designed by Albert Rutherston for Lillah McCarthy playing Lavinia, Shaw’s Christian heroin, in 1913. It evokes the simplicity and elegance of Roman dress, with the overbodice and simple flowing skirt made in the lightest of silks hand painted with geometric and stylised floral motifs. www.peopleplayuk.com

Object history
This costume was worn by Lillah McCarthy as Lavinia in a production of George Bernard Shaw's play "Androcles and the Lion" performed at the St. James's Theatre, London on September 1st 1913. The production was directed by Granville Barker, and designed by Albert Rothenstein (Rutherston). The costumes were made by Mrs Owen and Mr Savage, and painted by R & G Manning Pike.

Given to the British Theatre Museum Association by Mrs R.B. Hetherington, through the Borough of Worthing Museum and Art Gallery, in October 1966.
