Triptych

1575-1600 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This intricately carved triptych features scenes from the crucifixion of Christ. The feathers (believed to be hummingbird) which line the inside of the case have faded with age, but the original iridescent colours would have been particularly striking.

Made in Mexico in the late 16th century, this triptych shows the influence not only of religion but also of decorative devices common in Europe at this time. The gilded silver strapwork on the outside of the boxwood case was a popular decorative motif used widely in western architecture and decoration.

Gallery label
Triptych 1575–1600 Europeans were fascinated by the use of brilliantly coloured feathers in the art of the indigenous Mexica (Aztec). This triptych includes hummingbird feathers. They form the background to minutely carved scenes of Christ’s Passion and his descent from the cross, copied from imported prints. The triptych is probably the work of skilled indigenous craftsmen guided by European friars.
