Man's jacket made of woven cotton and wool. The body is made of two lengths of hand-woven warp-faced navy and white striped cotton and red wool cloth, each with width of 27.5 cm. These lengths are folded in half, the fold forming the shoulders and then over-stitched together leaving arm holes and a front opening. Additional lengths of the striped blue and white cotton have been formed into tubes for sleeves and over-stitched at the shoulders. A band of supplementary weft in red wool decorates the lower half, and applied panels of heavy navy cotton embellish the sides and back.

Object history
One of the articles (IS 16 to 20-1987) acquired in c. 1925 by the donor's husband, Wilfred James Dunn, during his time of service with the British Medical Corps in Burma. Dunn was stationed at Thayetmyo, Rangoon, Maymyo and Mandalay.

Historical context
The Mar, a farming people, are a major sub-group of the Kachins, who occupy the great tract of hill-country in Northern Burma around the headwaters of the Chindwin and Irrawaddy rivers.
Production
Previously thought to be from an ethnic group in the Shan States. Re-attributed to the Maru of Kachin state by Sandra Dudley of the Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford University. 1999. For further examples see Pitt Rivers; Book No. Green 37; Jacket (Maru Kachin)
