Historical context | The boldly embossed floral ornament is of a style formerly attributed to the Negroli School of Milan. Similar ornament appears on the helmet made by Caremolo di Mondrone of Milan presented by Federigo Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua to the Emperor Charles V in 1534. There were doubtless other armourers in Milan capable of turning out such finely modelled helmets. Compare the Wallace Collection helmet (No. 105) which is of even purer classical form. |
