Brief description | Sabre decorated with trophies, steel and silver gilt, with sheath, made by Richard Teed and supplied by Gilbert of London, the blade is from Turkey, London hallmarks for 1804-5 |

Object history | The handle is in the shape of a lion swallowing a serpent (the British Lion swallowing evil), while the scabbard is decorated with trophies, foliage, Britannia and the Royal Arms. The trophies include fasces (case 25) and a pelta, a crescent-shaped shield. The sword probably belonged to Charles, Earl of Whitworth, Colonel Commandant of eh Homsdale Infantry. Historical significance: This sword belonged to Charles, Earl Whitworth (1752-1825), as Colonel Commandant of the Holmsdale Infantry. |
