Brief description
Sabre decorated with trophies, steel and silver gilt, with sheath, made by Richard Teed and supplied by Gilbert of London, the blade is from Turkey, London hallmarks for 1804-5
Physical description
Presentation sabre, the blade Turkish, with English hilt and sheath
Object history
The handle is in the shape of a lion swallowing a serpent (the British Lion swallowing evil), while the scabbard is decorated with trophies, foliage, Britannia and the Royal Arms. The trophies include fasces (case 25) and a pelta, a crescent-shaped shield. The sword probably belonged to Charles, Earl of Whitworth, Colonel Commandant of eh Homsdale Infantry.

Historical significance: This sword belonged to Charles, Earl Whitworth (1752-1825), as Colonel Commandant of the Holmsdale Infantry.
