This is one of a group of German traditional toys which were made in the 1900s, but were based on very old designs. At each end of the crossbar is a hummingbird with a leather bellows. When the upright is moved from side to side the bellows are operated causing a short whistle.

Physical description
The basic structure consists of an upright and a crossbar. At each end of the latter are attached painted wooden birds standing on metal legs. Each bird has leather bellows, and one is painted yellow, red, green, white and black with white and green feathers while the other is red, blue, white, yellow and black with only the remains of blue and yellow feathers. When the upright is moved from side to side the bellows are operated using a short whistle.
