Made from one length of handwoven striped brown and blue cloth (L. 52 cm x W. 23 cm) folded in half (the fold forming the pocket of the bag) and a narrow length of white braid (W. 1 cm.) forming the sides and carrying strap which finishes in twisted and knotted tassels.

The front of the bag is partly decorated with horizontal rows of geometric supplementary weft patterns in red, white, yellow, blue and green.

The sides are decorated with a row of four brown and blue pom-poms.

A striped blue and brown n'hpye (shoulder bag) in plain and supplementary weave worn by a person of one of the ethnic groups of Kachin State northern Burma. Decorated with side tassels and pom-poms and colourful geometric designs, ca. 1877

Object history
This shoulder bag together with 2353(IS), 2354(IS) and 2357(IS) were presented to the India Museum by Captain Crawford Cooke on 7/11/1877.
Production
1880 Slip Book states that four embroidered bags* were presented in 7/11/[18]77 by Captain Crawford Cooke and that they were articles of clothing worn by the Kachyen tribe.
