Made from one length of handwoven dark blue cotton (W. 25 cm. x L. 59 cm) folded in half (the fold forming the pocket of the bag. and a narrow strip of navy cloth (W. 5 cm.) forming the sides and carrying strap which is finished in twisted knotted tassels.

The top part of the front of the bag is decorated with close horizontal rows of brown, white, green, light blue and yellow diamond shaped patterns in a supplementary weft weave. Repeating the same colours the lower part of the bag and sides have a more open design of rows of stylised flower heads and geometric shapes. The front is further decorated with six plaited and twisted long brown tassels partly threaded with grass seeds called coix lacryma (Job's Tears).

The back and sides of the bag are decorated with applied brown panels and small red tassels.

A dark blue fringed n'hpye (shoulder bag) worn by a person of one of the ethnic groups of Kachin State northern Burma. With colourful geometric designs in supplementary weave and applied decoration of strips of cloth and Job's Tears. ca. 1877.

Object history
This shoulder bag together with 2354(IS), 2355(IS) and 2357(IS) were presented to the India Museum by Captain Crawford Cooke on 7/11/1877.
Production
1880 Slip Book states that four embroidered bags* were presented in 7/11/[18]77 by Captain Crawford Cooke and that they were articles of clothing worn by the Kachyen tribe.
