This wax relief is made by Jonquim Machado de Castro (1733-1822) in Portugal in ca. 1770. Machado de Castro was the most celebrated Portuguese sculptor of the 18th century, and his reputation is based mainly on his bronze equestrian statue of King Joseph. He was appointed the official sculptor of Portugal in the reign of Queen Mary I. The Museu Nacional de Machado de Castro in Coimbra, inaugurated 1913, is named after him.

Physical description
Wax relief. Three quarter length high relief in coloured wax, representing a girl holding a vase, painted with chinoiserie decoration, containing flowers. She wears a low cut gown, with a jewelled brooch at her breast, and a flowing green cloak caught at the shoulder by a similar brooch. On her head, which is turned towards her left, is a wreath of flowers. In the background is the suggestion of a landscape with towers.

The relief is enclosed in a glazed circular wooden frame.
