Mug

1868-1869 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This mug is an example of the British response to the vogue for damascening. Oxidation, which was normally used to darken large, sculpted areas of silver, is here used in the manner of an inlay like niello. Although bearing a London hallmark (Martin, Hall & Co. had a retail outlet in the capital), it was probably made in Sheffield.
