The inscription on the left (V.Francoschina: AE: S: 18; V Francoschina at the age of eighteen) implies that this is a portrait, but both it and its companion, representing Age, may also be allegories of the transcience of earthly beauty.

Marks and inscriptions | 'V.FRANCOSCHINA:AE:S:18'. (Inscribed on the left. The inscription indicates the miniature as representing a stock character named ‘Franceschina’ from the Commedia dell’arte, an early form of professional theatre originating in Italy. In early Commedia performances, the female servant figure often went by Franceschina or Smeraldina. In this wax miniature a green curtain with a border of gold and painted flowers suspends from the top of the image, framing the female figure and creating the setting of a stage.) |
