Marks and inscriptions
'V.FRANCOSCHINA:AE:S:18'. (Inscribed on the left. The inscription indicates the miniature as representing a stock character named ‘Franceschina’ from the Commedia dell’arte, an early form of professional theatre originating in Italy. In early Commedia performances, the female servant figure often went by Franceschina or Smeraldina. In this wax miniature a green curtain with a border of gold and painted flowers suspends from the top of the image, framing the female figure and creating the setting of a stage.)
