Engraved with the crest and baron's coronet of Charles Baron Stuart de Rothesay (1779-1845) and with the motto of the Order of the Bath, TRIA JUNCTA IN UNO. Lord Stuart de Rothesay held diplomatic posts in both Paris (1815-24 and 1828-31) and Lisbon (1810-14). Entertaining was an important activity for diplomats and dining equipment was often supplied by the government to ambassadors serving abroad. It is likely that Rothesay's dessert cutlery was purchased during his tours of office in Paris and Lisbon. The service has had engraving added at a later date to include the baron's coronet after Rothesay was created Baron in 1828.
