Robert Bowyer was a well-known miniaturist and was appointed miniaturist to George III in 1759. Catherine Andras (born 1775) was adopted by Mr and Mrs Bowyer about 1800 and became an accomplished and prolific portraitist in wax, being appointed modeller to Queen Charlotte in 1801. She exhibited two portaits of Bowyer at the Royal Academy between 1799 and 1824. This is the second and was exhibited in 1815. An identical portrait is in the collection of waxes lent by Captain Bruce Ingram and is there identified as the Duke of Clarence, afterwards William IV.
