Earlier sauce tureens had a moulded foot and it was not until the early 19th century that the four footed variety appeared. The heavy, cast feet, finial and handles are typical of the massive and solid appearance of early 19th century silver. The silversmith William Fountain was the son of John Fountain (shipwright) of Poplar, Middlesex. He registered his last mark in 1821.
