The periodical Building News regularly featured new wallpaper designs because its readers - architects, builders and decorators - were largely responsible for selecting wallpapers on behalf of their clients, or at least directing their choices. The illustration shows 'Rose' wallpaper by Walter Crane. This is a reworking of his design for a nursery wallpaper, 'Sleeping Beauty', but without the figures. This illustration makes the point that a good filling paper (that is, the paper covering the middle portion of the wall, below the frieze and above the dado, or picture rail) should be designed as an unassertive 'all- over' pattern, something suitable as a background to pictures.
