This medallion entitled the 'Unknown Man' is of turned boxwood and made by an unknown artist in Germany ca. 1550-1575.

It depicts the portrait of a man and on the reverse it is branded with the monogram DPC.
It was probably part of a series of gamespieces. Habich thought the present piece and museum number 239-1853 were from a series of gamespieces, based on Renaissance medals, and all signed with a monogram made with a branding iron.

The medallion depicts the bust of a man facing right, bearded, and wearing a broad-brimmed hat over a close caul.
The remains of a sealing wax stamp with a coat of arms imprinted on it are to be seen on the reverse.
