Historical context
Bartolozzi arrived in England in 1764 already possessing a reputation for his fine classical formulations and mastery of the stipple technique, replacing the simple linear hatching of engraving with dots and stars to achieve soft tonal renderings. Working frequently to the drawings of his one-time pupil Cipriani, Bartolozzi produced an estimated 2,500 plates including many music title pages and benefit tickets for musical friends and performers. Cipriani's layouts and Bartolozzi's technique recall Parisian music-titles of the 1730s engraved by Simon Henri Thomassin (1687-1741) after designs by Nicolas Lancret (1690-1745) and by Jacques Philippe Lebas (1707-1783).
