Cigarette Holder

Cigarette Holder
ca. 1925 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This aluminium cigarette holder was made about 1925, during what is known as the Jazz Age. The bright cut decoration is carved at an angle so that it catches the light and sparkles.

The two decades following the First World War (1914-1918) witnessed a social revolution. During the war, women had been drafted into the workforce while the men were away at the front. After it was over, they enjoyed new political and social freedoms. Women now smoked in public and so required smoking accessories, such as this cigarette holder, that had previously been an exclusively male preserve.
