Physical description
A small white terrier dog viewed in profile, facing to the left of the image, excitedly pawing at a cage trap containing a rat. Behind, a dark-coloured dog pushes head through the gap of an open door to watch the scene. In the foreground, to the left of the image, is a plaited whip (with a handle made from what appears to be the leg of a deer or similar animal) and a twig broom.
