Helmet

1811-1812 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This style of English helmet is based on a Roman model and was introduced for cavalry officers during the Napoleonic Wars (1796-1815). Here the silver crest has been covered with a thin layer of gold (gilt) and has particularly skilful modelled and chased decoration.

This piece was made in silver by two silversmiths closely associated with Rundell, Bridge & Rundell, the Royal Goldsmiths. It may well therefore be associated with the Prince Regent (later George IV, ruled 1820-1830), who designed uniforms and equipment for his favourite regiments.
