This decorative beaker has several features that are typical of the designs of Edward Spencer (1872-1938). The silversmith who executed the design used punches of various shapes and a chasing hammer to model the surface without removing any metal and create the delicate chased decoration. A special broad-headed planishing hammer would have been used to create the smooth surface finish.
Spencer and the designer Nelson Dawson founded the Artificers' Guild, which made this beaker, in London in 1901. Dawson’s association was brief and he left in 1903. The business closed in 1938.
