Another drawing by Cortona, showing a similar design, is in the Uffizi (no. 578 Orn). The bee of the Barberini employed in conjunction with a Maltese cross suggests that the design was made for Cardinal Antonio Barberini the younger, nephew of Pope Urban VIII and Grand Prior of the Order of St John. Noehles (loc. cit.) dates the drawing in the early 1630s. Another design for a mace by the same hand is no. 682 below. The old numbers on the drawings show that they both belonged to the same album or series. |
