This is a drawing in pen, ink, and wash on paper of the elevation and profile of the lower storey of the Garden House at Thorpe Hall, Longthorpe, Northamptonshire. Thorpe Hall was a mansion built in 1653-1656 during the Commonwealth period by Peter Mills for the Lord Chief Justice Oliver St. John.

Physical description

Drawing in pen, ink, and wash on paper of the elevation and profile of the lower storey of the Garden House at Thorpe Hall. The illustration depicts in elevation a pair of doors in the centre with unadorned pilasters on either side. Curving sculptural detail is illustrated on the walls above the doors and a small sculptural of an animal' face is centred above the doors. The profile of the pilasters with scrolling tops is illustrated on the left side of the drawing. An inscription and scale are included in pen at the bottom of the sheet.

'The Garden House as built had an upper storey in the form of a gable surmounted by a curved pediment and pierced by a bulls-eye window. Only the facade now exists, the rest of the building being demolished. For a photograph see Plate 47 in the article on Thorpe Hall in English Homes, Period IV , Vol. I by H. Avray Tipping, London, 1920.'
