This is a relatively early example of a Design Registry mark. Between 1842 and 1881, the British Patent Office used a Registry mark on British manufactured goods. The mark, in the form of a diamond with each corner bearing a letter or number which shows the exact year, month and date of when that particular design was put into production. In 1884, this "kite mark" was changed to a serial number.
