This agate cup was bought in 1867 as an Elizabethan masterpiece for the large sum of £ 350. Recent investigation has concluded that it may well have been assembled from parts of different dates shortly before it was purchased by the Museum. The agate bowl is late 18th or early 19th century and the stem is probably late 16th century Antwerp work. The disc which bears the London hallmarks was probably pressed into the base in the 19th century to add authenticity and the whole is held together by a machine-made screw. The cup was shown in the exhibition Fake ? The Art of Deception at the British Museum in 1990.
