Count Otto von Solms, Lord of Münzenberg

Medal
ca. 1550 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This is a solnhofen stone medal made by Dietrich Schro in Germany in around 1550. The medal has an obverse only representing the bust of Count Otto von Solms facing left with moustache and part beard, wearing a low hat. The background arabesques on the model recall the work of Joachim Deschler, and the artist was probably influenced by him. The portrait was posthumous, and seems to have been based on Hans Schwarz's medal of the same sitter of 1520. A silver medal after this model is in the Münzkabinett, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, Dresden.
Schro (active 1545-1568) was a sculptor active in Mainz. He carved the tombs of the Counts of Solms. For this reason, the group of medals portraying the Courts of Solms and signed ‘D.S.’ have been convincingly attributed to Schro.
