Engraving by Albrecht Dürer, 'Rustic Couple'; ca.1497, German. Inscribed with artist's monogram at bottom centre. A man and his wife turned to the left in mid-stride on a path, against a white background. They wear plain attire and the man's trousers are bound with cord. He has his arm flung up, gesticulating, as he seems to admonish his wife from a toothless mouth. She frowns, her eyes downcast.
