Clementina Maude, 5 Princes Gardens

Photograph
ca. 1862-1863 (photographed)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Lady Hawarden’s subjects are often the beauty of women, the comforts of home, the act of reflection and the play of light. Here she indicates the passage of time in the small gesture that her daughter makes in marking a line in the book she is reading. It is as if she pauses for a moment for the photograph to be taken.

'Clementina, Lady Hawarden (Untitled) Photographic Study (or) Study from Life (D.558) c.1862-c.1863 5 Princes Gardens, interior: first floor, front: left window (net curtains drawn back): starred wall-paper: floor-boards: Clementina, seated, holding open book in lap, right forefinger pointing to page. Hat on floor; barrel chair in left foreground. Reflection of Clementina's dress in window. Visible through window: balustrade; houses south side of Princes Gardens. 235 x 267 mm PH 293-1947 Literature: ed. Graham Ovenden, Clementina Lady Hawarden, 1974, p.69 (cropped). Microfilm: 3.18.129; V&A Picture Library negative no. GA 1254 (reference no. 17895). As in Ph 457-1968:303 (D.303), Ph 457-1968:202 (D.577) and Ph 457-1968:371 (D.582), the viewer is invited to contemplate the image of a young girl, who is in turn lost in contemplation or reverie. Above and beyond the challenge of instantaneity is the suggestion of the suspension of time. Such moments are marked for us as surely as Clementina marks her line on the page as she pauses to be photographed.'
