This is a page from a Missal, a service book containing the text necessary for the performance of the Mass. The miniature has been cut out and was evidently sold separately, before the parent leaf. At a later stage, the leaf was made good with the insertion of a miniature from a printed Book of Hours showing the Coronation of the Virgin (see 8122A). The border design on this leaf based on multicoloured acanthus, in which the top of the leaf is blue (or another colour) and the underside brushed gold, became standard in 15th-century France. At the foot of the page is the coat of arms of Cardinal Jean Rolin, who was formerly Bishop of Autun and Chalons. He died in 1483 at the age of 75.
