Leaf from a Gradual

Manuscript Leaf
mid 15th century (illuminated)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This is a page from a Gradual. The Gradual contained the musical parts of the Missal, the book containing the services of the Mass. This page is for the Feast of St Andrew, who was one of Christ's Apostles. The initial D at the top of the page shows Christ calling him. The initial is historiated (that is, with a figurative picture, istoire being the term for a story) and is a visual reference to the content of the music. The manuscript was possibly made for an Augustinian monastery in Verona, such as Santa Maria in Organo.
