Dish

1710-1722 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This large dish is decorated in overglaze enamels depicting a bird on a branch. This style originated in court painting of the Song period (960-1279) before becoming a widespread motif in the following centuries. The decorative border bears the inscription: 'Ten thousand years of long life without end', which echoes the Kangxi emperor's title: 'Lord of Ten thousand things'. Many collectors at the end of the 18th century believed that this dish was made for the emperor's 60th birthday in 1713, although no clear evidence supports this statement.
