Lady Hawarden has posed her eldest daughter in a classical style of dress, with bare arms and shoulders. The model’s hands are placed on a table, whose shining surface reflects them. Her head and hair are emphasised by a star tiara. The eyes look upwards, perhaps suggesting spirituality or preoccupation. The tonal range encompasses almost pure white in the dress and deep black in the body’s shadow. Sharp highlights pierce the darkened table. The subject contains no obvious narrative but offers a variety of interpretations. It also presents an appreciation of forms and textures seen in strong interior light.
