This is a silver medal made by Matthäus Carl in Germany in 1598. The medal represents Hieronymus Paumgartner, depicted at the age of 60 according to the inscription.
Carl (active 1584-d.1609) was a goldsmith and medallist, who arrived in Nuremberg in 1584, although he was probably born in Augsburg and trained there under Balduin Drentwett. He worked for the court at Dresden, and is recorded as making jewellery in 1590. He struck a series of 300 coins for Bishop Julius of Würzburg in 1597. Like his rival, Valentin Maler, his models were in wax.
