Clementina and Isabella Grace Maude, 5 Princes Gardens

Photograph
ca. 1863-1864 (photographed)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Here Lady Hawarden stages a tableau that looks as if it might derive from an opera. Her eldest daughters are dressed as a young man, on the left, and a young woman, on the right. The young woman appears to be offering a purse to the man, but he raises his hands to reject it and looks away. The scene is staged in the studio with very few props - the casement of a window, a side table and a strip of net curtain. The strong side lighting from the window and the intricate pattern of shadows give life and animation to the scene.
