Clementina Maude, 5 Princes Gardens

Photograph
ca. 1862 (photographed)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

There are many photographs of women looking away from the camera from the period around 1860. Here, the photographer’s daughter is posed gazing out of the window. This gives a view of the busy world of the cultural quarter that was then taking shape in the South Kensington area of London. The image perhaps suggests the somewhat secluded and restricted life of young women at the time. Characteristically, Lady Hawarden has placed a chair in the corner to balance the composition. The curved back-rail of the chair, lit from the window, echoes the bare shoulders of the model.
