This medal depicting Ludovico III Gonzaga, the Marquis of Mantua, was made by Bartolomeo Melioli, dated 1475.
On this medal appear two late portraits of Ludovico. In both he is wearing armour, although his fighting days were long over.
The inscription on the obverse refers to the famous relic of the Precious Blood in Sant' Andrea. On the reverse he is seated and confronted by Faith and Learning (Pallas Athene).
Bartolomeo Melioli, a Mantuan goldsmith and coin-engraver, made five other Gonzaga medals.

Medal in bronze, Lodovico III Gonzaga, Marquis of Mantua (1414-1478).
Obverse, bust to right of Gonzaga, in a richly ornamented cuirass, and wearing a flat topped cap. Inscription.
Reverse, Gonzaga, in Roman armour, seated on a throne on the left, facing Faith and Pallas who are advancing towards him. Faith points upwards with her right hand, and Pallas is armed with a spear and shield and carries an orb. Beneath his throne sits a small animal that looks like a dog. Inscription.
