This is a photograph from Hawarden’s ‘Orientalist’ series. It includes the characteristic ingredients of the divan, the Paisley-pattern textiles and the fancy dress costumes worn by her daughters.

The photographer has employed other favourite devices. The composition is divided almost centrally by a broad stripe of light. Features such as the sleeping head at the right and the jug on the shelf at the left are carefully balanced.

5 Princes Gardens, interior: first floor, front: starred wall-paper: Isabella Grace (half-length; right profile), eyes closed, standing, hands clasped and resting on back of draped divan, on which is Clementina, eyes closed, reclining, left hand on breast. Both in fancy dress (Orientalist style). Drape and edge of mantelpiece, on which are print and jug, on left.
