This is a photograph from Hawarden’s ‘Orientalist’ series. It includes the characteristic ingredients of the divan, the Paisley-pattern textiles and the fancy dress costumes worn by her daughters.
The photographer has employed other favourite devices. The composition is divided almost centrally by a broad stripe of light. Features such as the sleeping head at the right and the jug on the shelf at the left are carefully balanced.
