Lady Hawarden posed her daughter in a corner of her studio. The model stretches up to clasp the knob of a casement window. The pose seems to be an exercise in the photography of gesture, texture, mass and dramatic patterns of light and shade. You can see a similar composition in another Hawarden photograph (PH.457:454-1968).
