Photograph
ca. 1862 (photographed)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This is a typical ‘Photographic Study’ by Lady Hawarden. She has placed one of her daughters in the corner of her studio, between the wall and the door. An emphatic stripe of light illuminates her left side, including her arm and hand. Other patterns of light and shade complete the composition. Francis Seymour Haden borrowed the composition for his etching The Letter (1863).
