Lady Hawarden posed her daughter carefully in this photograph. She holds a fan to her head, as the focus of the roofline swoops down to her. The dark band across the dress continues the geometrical theme.
This graceful but graphic pose inspired the etcher Francis Seymour Haden. He borrowed and adapted it for The Assignation (1865), where the figure is shown leaning against a tree in a wood. The title of the etching seems rather obvious compared to the open meanings of Hawarden’s untitled photographs, which she exhibited as ‘Photographic Studies’ or ‘Studies from Life’.

Historical context note
From departmental notes
'Clementina, Lady Hawarden (Untitled) Photographic Study (or) Study from Life (D.347) c.1861 5 Princes Gardens, exterior: terrace: Isabella Grace (left profile), standing, leaning on balustrade, right hand holding fan to head. View east over terraces of Princes Gardens. 102 x 164 mm (stereoscopic) PH 457-1968:163 Literature: Microfilm: 3.19.236 Also: Virginia Dodier, 'Haden, Photography and Salmon Fishing', Print Quarterly, Ill, 1986, p.45, fig 33 (discussed p.46). Francis Seymour Haden used this photograph as the basis for an etching, The Assignation (1865). When a tracing made from the first state of the etching is laid over the photograph, the outlines of the central figures correspond exactly. This is the only instance in which such a direct connection between Haden's work and Lady Hawarden's photographs can be shown. [See article cited above for full discussion.] '
