Object history note

These shoes were made in England for a wealthy gentlewoman. Although their style and production owe much to English fashion and industry of the early 18th century, the silk used to face the shoe was actually produced in Iran, probably at an earlier date. Thus, in a small way, this pair of shoes demonstrates the transmission of artforms and media from the Middle East into Europe.

Descriptive line
