The ornamental band on this beaker shows Gothic foliage and intertwined animals. Medieval borders of manuscripts and stone carvings in churches often included animals observed from nature. A page holding a shield with the arms of Nuremberg forms the finial.

Physical description

Tapering cylindrical beaker, with pierced band of Gothic foliage and animals on body, the moulded foot with croketed band supported by three lions seated, the lid with man holding shield of arms of Nuremberg in red and black enamel, the inside cover and the base with engraved shields.

Object history note

Ex Londesborough. Arms of Nuremburg in red and black enamel restored by Elkington's- central band surely and possibly bands of fleur de lys. The rest seems ok.
