The ornamental band on this beaker shows Gothic foliage and intertwined animals. Medieval borders of manuscripts and stone carvings in churches often included animals observed from nature. A page holding a shield with the arms of Nuremberg forms the finial.

Beaker and cover, pierced band of Gothic foliage and animals on body, man holding shield of arms of Nuremberg on lid, Nuremberg, ca. 1470
Physical description
Tapering cylindrical beaker, with pierced band of Gothic foliage and animals on body, the moulded foot with croketed band supported by three lions seated, the lid with man holding shield of arms of Nuremberg in red and black enamel, the inside cover and the base with engraved shields.

Object history
Formerly in the collection of Albert, Lord Londesborough. The figure on the cover was damaged while being moulded for electrotyping by a workman from Elkington; the cup was sent to Elkington for repair. The enamel on the shield held by the figure was destroyed during this repair process, and Elkington were required to make good the enamel on the arms of Nuremburg.
